"Quality is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution"
John Ruskin. 1819-1900 (Victorian Art Critic, Draughtsman, Social Thinker & Philanthropist)
"What a fabulous afternoon we had at the WhatHouse? Awards and with Jack Whitehall lending his particular brand of humour to the ceremony, the afternoon flew by. And how inspiring to see charities such as Dallaglio Rugby Works encouraging young people who have been disenfranchised by the traditional education methods being encouraged to meet their educational potential and to find a contributory place in society through education and employment, something we as an industry would do well to encourage considering the skill shortages we face in the construction sector.
It was gratifying to see a number of our clients receiving some well-deserved awards for the quality of their developments and this got me thinking about what it is that singles out the developers that manage to achieve this level of quality, particularly those who choose the additional challenges associated with renovation projects.
The challenges of delivering a high quality renovation project are both many and varied and people will often say that you never know what you’re getting into until you open the building up. Which to a large extent is true, however this is not an excuse for an “on the hoof” approach. Quality renovation specialists recognise that careful pre-planning, combined with an agile design process will lead to a quality product, carefully controlled costs and ultimately a satisfied customer.
Developers who deliver this award-winning level of development recognise the need to fully understand the potential and limitations of the building they are renovating. A homeowners’ expectations of a newly refurbished building will place demands on the fabric that it was not originally designed to accept, so engaging the right specialists early on in the process to undertake a holistic design is both essential for the ultimate building performance but also for managing budgets and costs.
The nature of refurbishment almost inevitably means that even with all of that pre-planning, an old building can still throw up some surprises and an agile and flexible design process will be required in order to deal with these issues. Similarly engaging experienced contractors specialising in refurbishment works leads to a higher level of delivery.
To me, developers who rise to the challenge of renovating an existing building, and deliver this award-winning standard follow this mantra of planning, agility of design and quality of execution which delivers high quality projects of this type."
